Holidays are bloody great, and the last time I wrote about them nearly two years ago, I reflected on the idea of building a life you don’t need a holiday from. That idea holds true, but this time, I’m coming at it from a slightly different angle. We’ve just returned from three incredible weeks in Tasmania—a holiday that wasn’t just about adventure and relaxation but one we really needed after the year we’ve had.
This past year has been one of the hardest we’ve faced. Teddy’s health challenges—coming into the world prematurely, surviving sepsis, and major open-heart surgery, and proving himself as the toughest little human we know—have been nothing short of extraordinary. Add to that the everyday pressures of work and life in general, we’ve been stretched in ways we never imagined. There were moments when we were just running on fumes, trying to keep everything together.
But then came Tassie—a break we didn’t just want, but desperately needed.
We spent three weeks immersed in all Tasmania has to offer. From exploring the Tamar Valley and the north coast in a campervan, to connecting with family and friends, this trip was a much-needed reset. It was the kind of holiday where life slows down, you breathe a little deeper, laugh a little louder, and remember what really matters.
And, for the first time in a long time, I felt like I could exhale.
A Hard Lesson in Resilience
This holiday wasn’t just about rest—it was about survival and resilience. When you’re constantly under pressure, it’s easy to lose sight of yourself, your partner, and the reasons you’re pushing so hard in the first place.
Taking this time away reminded me of something so important: breaks aren’t a luxury; they’re a necessity. There’s so much pressure to be “on” all the time—to be productive, present, and perfect. But sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is admit you need to stop, step away, and recharge.
For us, this pause was everything. It gave us space to reflect on the chaos of the past year, to laugh at the absurdities, and to appreciate just how far we’ve come.
Coming Back Recharged
Now, back at home, I feel a renewed energy and a fresh perspective on what’s ahead. This year is shaping up to be something incredible, with exciting opportunities in my work, with MI training, family adventures, and continuing to build a life we’re proud of (oh, and planning a wedding!).
So here’s to the power of stepping away when you need to, to the beauty of reconnecting with yourself and your loved ones, and to the reminder that resilience isn’t about never breaking—it’s about how you rebuild.
Holidays are bloody great. A life you don't need a holiday from is too. But this one wasn’t just a getaway—it was a lifeline. And for that, I’m so deeply grateful.
